Plot: In this book Vivek Agnihotri shares his research through which he tried to elucidate the mystery around the death of late Prime Minister of India-Lal Bahadur Shastri. The book unfolds the events that occurred during his visit to Tashkent for signing a peace accord with Pakistan, in the presence of USSR Premier, Alexei Kosygin.

Many suspected at that time that Shastri ji was poisoned and therefore ninth Directorate of the KGB questioned and arrested some for his suspicious death including his cook.

Scenario in India was altogether different. Indian Prime Minister died a suspicious death but no post mortem was conducted. We till date weren’t able to decode the mystery of his death, if he was poisoned or killed by CIA, KGB? Was it seriously a heart attack? The facts presented in this book make us think otherwise.

What I liked about the book?

I recently have started reading historical books on Indian leaders and specifically books around are leaders who fought for independence. I am happy that I picked this one. The way author has presented all his research in this book doesn’t sound confusing at all, infact every sentence and chapter is connected to each other, you can very easily follow the sequence in which the event might have had happened. This tells us so much about the political time during Shastri ji’s  reign. India Pakistan war, and India emerging as a winner in the war, followed by declaration of emergency. These were definitely one of those scenarios where India needed a head strong leader who knows what he wants and Shastri ji definitely turned out to be that leader.

After reading this book, I can definitely imagine that if Shastri ji would have continued as PM of India and was not killed, we would have been living in a different India today.

Who should read this?

This book should be read by each and every Indian who has always been reading history books taught in school. History books in Indian schools definitely need a revamp. We need to share more on the life of our strong leaders like Shastri ji. We need to hear more on the well though decisions that they took make India great again. We also need to listen about How some highly incompetent people were made Prime minister of India and the brainless decisions that they took, which took our country 50 years back.

Final Verdict

A big YES, please read this book. For me this has turned out to be  one of those book that I might want to gift to my fellow Indian book readers.
