Plot: It is a 1993 American young adult novel. This book was initially launched as children’s book but the dystopian society that this books speaks about was definitely not kids friendly which ultimately resulted into the banning of this book. Main protagonist in this story is our 12 year old boy-Jonas. he is living in a society which is crime free. In this society individuals have a pre-defined role/job to undertake once they are an adult. Job assigned to Jonas was that of a Memory keeper, which turned his life upside down. Without sharing a lot I can say that after he took his role, he understood the dark reality of the society that he is living in, which shaped his future actions.

What I liked about the book? I liked how the author has been successful in making us understand the pleasures of nature which we have taken for granted today but will be a treasure of tomorrow. The way the giver explains the different emotions and colors with examples, Jonas realized what their society is missing. While the story initially did gave a broad and forwarward looking or utopian outlook to the society as we could not see any crime scene depctions or anything cruel happneinng. But steadily as we read through the chapters we could feel the claustrophobic boredom in the whole surrounding of that society where occupation for the kids were pre-defined. Individuals had no knowledge of color, no emotions and no perspectives. Author successfully helps us to be appreciatibe of the human life that we are living today.

Who should read this?

Everyone should read this book, once in their lifetime. Not recommended to kids aged less than 15.

What did I learn from this book?

  • One thing to learn from Jonas is that we should never just blindly accept what society offers us. We should question the system whenever we see any political and social anomaly.
  • Appreciate your surrounding (nature, people, animals, everything)
